ACC New Zealand Masters Games Launched for 2008 - Dick Tayler to be Ambassador

Dunedin (19 July, 2007) – Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Dick Tayler, is to be the official ambassador for next year’s ACC New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin.

Tayler, who became a national folk hero when he snatched Commonwealth glory in the 10,000 metres in Christchurch in 1974, is excited about being amidst the over 8,000 competitors from New Zealand, Australia and around the world.

The athlete, turned salesperson, said he is looking forward to returning to Dunedin after spending five years in the city during the early days of his running career during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.

“During that time I made some great friends, and I hope many of the competitors will not only enjoy the Games but also have the chance to rekindle friendships in the very hospitable southern city.

“The Masters Games gives us all some incentive to get off our backsides and do more exercise, but also allows us to challenge ourselves to go that little bit quicker, or further, in the event we participate in”, he said.

Confirmation as to whether Tayler will actually compete will be finalised nearer the Games.

Around 70 sports are on offer for the 2008 Dunedin Games, ranging from archery, athletics and basketball, to hockey, rugby, softball and yachting.

ACC continues to sponsor the Masters Games because so many of the participants, like Dick Tayler, are in positions to promote injury prevention messages.

The ACC New Zealand Masters Games alternate each year between Dunedin and Wanganui, and the 2008 event, from 2-10 February, will be the nineteenth time they have been held.
