A step forward for Masters movement |
|
Thursday, 18 October 2007 |
|
A group of influential Masters Events Organisers met yesterday to discuss the future of
mature age multi-sport events in Australasia and the World. With 10,000 Masters
participants gathering in Adelaide this week, taking part in the Australasian Masters
Games (a project of the Confederation of Australian Sport), a group of Masters Event
Organisers met and discussed this often overlooked but growing section of Sport.
Representatives from the major events in Australia, the Pan Pacific Masters Games and
the Alice Springs Masters met with event organisers from New Zealand and Sydney
2009 World Masters Games and heard the CEO of the International Masters Games
Association, Mr. Jens Holm outline the IMGA vision for the future of the Masters
movement.
Lachlan Clark, General Manager of CAS stated after the meeting “With the ageing of
Australia’s population and the increasing burden obesity is placing on our health system,
the role of Masters sport in helping mature age Australians live an active healthy lifestyle
has never been more important. The major outcome of the meeting was the resolution to
work together to promote the benefits of participation in sport as an integral part of the
strategy to improve the health and activity levels in mature people in Australia and New
Zealand”.
In a recent study, Dr Evan Atlantis from the University of Sydney Department of Exercise
and Sport Science asserted that only approximately 25 per cent of Australians met
national physical activity guidelines. When coupled with dietary guidelines a staggering
95% of Australians were not meeting the physical activity guidelines nor eating the
appropriate servings of fruit and vegetables per day. This is despite over twenty years of
health messages and health promotion conducted by State and Federal governments.
The 2009 Sydney World Masters have recently surveyed their participants and found
that 94% of Masters participants are categorised as healthy to exceptionally healthy and
only 3.3 per cent do not regularly exercise which is almost 40 per cent lower than the
Australian average. This points to the effectiveness of the Masters movement in keeping
people active throughout their lives.
The major outcomes from the meeting were:
- To conduct the first Australasian survey of Masters participants through the
combined databases of the major events staged in Australia and New Zealand
- To work proactively with all levels of Government so more people can enjoy the
benefits of the Masters lifestyle
- To cooperate on the staging and coordination of Masters Events throughout the
region.
Australasian Masters Games General Manager Lachlan Clark stated that “the meeting
was an important step forward and a sign of the maturing of the Masters movement in
Australia”. He went on to say that through close cooperation and coordination in the
region, he had no doubt that regional, national and international Masters events would
all continue to see increased participation.
Ends………

ACC New Zealand
Masters Games Launched for 2008 - Dick Tayler to be Ambassador
Dunedin (19 July, 2007) – Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Dick
Tayler, is to be the official ambassador for next year’s ACC New Zealand
Masters Games in Dunedin.
Tayler, who became a national folk hero when he snatched Commonwealth
glory in the 10,000 metres in Christchurch in 1974, is excited about being
amidst the over 8,000 competitors from New Zealand, Australia and around the
world.
The athlete, turned salesperson, said he is looking forward to
returning to Dunedin after spending five years in the city during the early
days of his running career during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.
“During that time I made some great friends, and I hope many of the
competitors will not only enjoy the Games but also have the chance to rekindle
friendships in the very hospitable southern city.
“The Masters Games gives us all some incentive to get off our backsides
and do more exercise, but also allows us to challenge ourselves to go that
little bit quicker, or further, in the event we participate in”, he said.
Confirmation as to whether Tayler will actually compete will be
finalised nearer the Games.
Around 70 sports are on offer for the 2008 Dunedin Games, ranging from
archery, athletics and basketball, to hockey, rugby, softball and yachting.
ACC continues to sponsor the Masters Games because so many of the
participants, like Dick Tayler, are in positions to promote injury prevention
messages.
The ACC New Zealand Masters Games alternate each year between Dunedin
and Wanganui, and the 2008 event, from 2-10 February, will be the nineteenth
time they have been held.

Dunedin Masters Games now a Charitable Trust
Dunedin (19 July, 2007) – Dunedin City Council General Manager Strategy
and Development, Kate Styles, announced this evening at the 2008 Masters Games
official launch that the New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin will now become a
Charitable Trust.
2008 sees the staging of New Zealand’s nineteenth Masters Games, and the
ninth for Dunedin. The event is now New Zealand’s biggest multi-national
sporting event, and since 1992 Dunedin has shared in the Games’ increasing
success.
Such success brings with it increasing demands for the financial backing
required to run such an event. Kate Styles said the competitive funding and
sponsorship market in Dunedin has meant the Masters Games in Dunedin has faced
some difficulty.
“Relying on sponsorship for the event was becoming increasingly
difficult, especially when there are so many great events in this city all
joining the line of those looking for financial assistance.
There is, as we all know, only so much funding available”, she said.
The new Trust status will enable Dunedin’s Masters Games to access other
sources of funds that have in the past been unavailable when the event was run
under the Dunedin City Council’s banner.
“The Dunedin New Zealand Masters Games Trust should go a long way
towards guaranteeing New Zealand’s oldest and most successful Masters sporting
event has a long and successful future”, said Ms Styles.

History
The Masters Games is a multi-sport event that offers "mature"
participants the opportunity to interact with each other in a range of sporting
and social activities.
The philosophy of Masters Games is one of
participation with competition being important but not all-important.
HISTORY:
- The very first Masters Games event was the World Masters
Games, held in 1985 in Canada. This event attracted 8,305 competitors from 61
different countries.
- The 1994 World Masters Games held in Brisbane, Australia
attracted whopping 24,000 athletes from 71 countries. A marked increase from the
very first games!
- Following this, national events began to surface. The
first Australian Masters Games was held in 1987.
- The very first New Zealand Masters Games event was held in
Wanganui in 1989.
- Originally the NZ Masters Games was to be a biannual event
held only in Wanganui. However, Dunedin entered a bid to host the Games in
Wanganui's off-season.
- Since 1991, the Games have been held every year,
alternating between Wanganui in the odd years and Dunedin in the even years.
- The NZ Masters Games have been running for 16 years thus
far. 2008 will be Dunedin's 9th Games.
- The minimum age to participate is 30 years in most sports.
However, Ice Figure Skating is open to those over 18 years of age whilst croquet is only
open to those over 50 years!
